The filing in the Manhattan federal court by the US Department of Justice adds that the company “actively encourages” the usage of these emissions controls systems with the EZ-Lynk software, using an online forum with representatives of the company even offering support for this feature. U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss in Manhattan said in a statement after the filing “Emissions controls on cars and trucks protect the public from harmful effects of air pollution. EZ Lynk has put the public’s health at risk by manufacturing and selling devices intended to disable those emissions controls.” The government seeks fines from the company as well as an injunction on further sales and installations of the system.
The move doesn't seem to be prompted by anything, but CNBC notes that the share price of Tesla was up over 1% following the announcement.
